Leadership Effectiveness Self-Assessment
See how your everyday leadership habits stack up against what the research says works.
You lead people whether or not you have the title, and the small things you do each week shape how your team performs. This short self-check looks at five leadership habits that decades of research link to engaged, high-performing teams. Answer honestly about what you actually do, not what you wish you did.
What it measures
- Direction & VisionYou give people a clear picture of where the team is going and why it matters.
- Developing OthersYou invest time in helping people grow, not just get work done.
- Accountability & Follow-throughYou set clear expectations and do what you say you will do.
- Communication & ListeningYou create conditions where people speak up and feel heard.
- Self-Awareness & AdaptabilityYou know your tendencies and adjust your approach when the situation changes.
The research behind it
Items are original wordings adapted from constructs in validated leadership scales, not the scales themselves. Direction and developing-others items draw on servant leadership (Liden, R. C., Wayne, S. J., Meuser, J. D., Hu, J., Wu, J., & Liao, C. (2015). Servant leadership: Validation of a short form of the SL-28. The Leadership Quarterly, 26(2), 254-269) and transformational leader behaviors (Podsakoff, P. M., MacKenzie, S. B., Moorman, R. H., & Fetter, R. (1990). Transformational leader behaviors and their effects on followers' trust in leader, satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behaviors. The Leadership Quarterly, 1(2), 107-142). Communication and safety items adapt the team psychological safety construct (Edmondson, A. (1999). Psychological safety and learning behavior in work teams. Administrative Science Quarterly, 44(2), 350-383). This is a reflective tool, not a validated psychometric instrument.
